What is Minerva Canada Safety Management Education Inc.?

A non-profit volunteer-run organization, Minerva Canada, aims to be a global leader in health and safety management education by influencing the curriculum of post-secondary institutions to ensure that future business leaders create healthier and safer workplaces.
The only organization of its kind, it:
  • advocates for increased inclusion of health and safety concepts in business and engineering curricula
  • educates the educators by providing business and engineering professors and instructors in universities and colleges with practical, curriculum-ready tools and initiatives
  • forges partnerships with governments, associations and accreditation boards
  • connects educators with Canada’s business enterprises to learn what industry seeks from new graduates entering the workforce and how health and safety management concepts are being applied in the workplace.
All resources and activities are provided free of charge to educators, financially supported by our roster of blue-chip corporate, organizational and government sponsors.

Engineering Student Health and Safety Certification Program
Since December 2018, eighty students and Minerva sponsors participated in beta testing Minerva’s first online H&S course consisting of 6 modules. Their input and comments were used by the University of Fredericton to finalize the first online course in March. Minerva’s university partners are now reviewing the final product and arranging for subscribing to the program. Minerva will launch its first online course by July 1, 2019.

January 18-21, 2019 Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.)
Congratulations to the 2019 business student winning teams from Concordia University, the University of Calgary and McGill University who won the top 3 prizes respectively in the Minerva Human Resources event at the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.).

November 2018 Webinar
Minerva Canada in partnership with the Conference Board of Canada and the Workplace Safety and Prevention Services conducted its first webinar on November 7th focused on Leading a Culture of Safety. Guest Speakers included Erin Oliver, VP of Employee Health and Safety at Modern Niagara.

May 2018 Minerva Canada – CIAC Responsible Care student winners
Congratulations to the 2018 engineering student winning teams from the University of Toronto for their first place finish and the University of Calgary for their second and third place finishes in the Minerva – CIAC competition. Teams made their final presentations and were awarded their prize money at the May 1,2018 Partners in Prevention Conference in Mississauga, Ontario.

May 2018 Minerva Canada Learning Forum at Lambton College
Over 60 college and university professors along with other participants attended a Minerva Learning Forum at Lambton College in Sarnia, Ontario The agenda for the event is on the website. Interested universities and colleges wishing to host a 2019 Learning Forum should contact Minerva Canada.

New Minerva Teaching Module “Risk Communications”
This new module, sponsored by Minerva and developed at the University of Alberta with content support from Methanex, can be found on the Minerva website.

New case studies and Teaching Modules in 2018
New case studies from our 2018, 2019 ICBC competitions ( Preliminary and Final Rounds) have been added to the website . Five Teaching Modules have recently been translated into French.

Upcoming Events

Online engineering student Health and Safety Certification program
Minerva Canada has partnered with 12 Canadian Engineering Schools to advance the development and implementation of a student H&S certification program that builds upon the content within Minerva’s Teaching Modules and other educational material. Minerva has contracted the University of Fredericton to design the online program. The details of it were presented at a meeting of the Canadian Engineering Deans and Minerva hopes to meet with the College Deans later this year. The first of four online courses has been completed and design of the second course is underway. Engineering Schools and Colleges who subscribe to the Minerva online program can have their students access the program on July 1, 2019. More details can be found on this website. 2019 Minerva engineering and college student competitions
Final submission date for the Minerva - CIAC case study competition is April 2, 2019 and the Minerva James Ham design competition is April 12, 2019. Student finalists for the case study competition will make their presentations on April 30th at the WSPS Partners in Prevention conference in Mississauga, Ontario on April 30th. Winning students for both competitions will be awarded their prizes at this conference on April 30th.

New Teaching Modules
Minerva Canada has partnered with Dalhousie University to develop a Teaching Module focused on Maritime Risk/Fisheries Safety.
